Is America Nothing More Than an Idea?

The 2020 Election

Democratic nominee for President Joe Biden is quoted saying that “America is an idea.” We have heard similar testimonies from the likes of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. This statement insinuates that America is not monolithic, but rather, it is malleable and unworthy of sovereignty. After elucidating this point, it is no surprise that proponents of ideas like cultural relativism happen to fall largely left of center. Elected officials could care less if alien values supersede our Western roots.

A mere 20 years ago, whether you were a Republican or Democrat, we all agreed on certain fundamental premises that were inseparably American, such as the Constitution. Our disputes pertained to trivial matters, like whether or not the minimum wage should be raised. Whether or not you and your neighbor held similar political beliefs was indifferent to the idea of sharing a beer on a Saturday night.

Since then, however, the left has gradually shifted the culture away from the idea of agreed-upon postulates and more towards radicalism and polarization. According to Pew Research Center, “divisions between Republicans and Democrats on fundamental political values … reached record levels during Barack Obama’s presidency. In Donald Trump’s first year as president, these gaps have grown even larger.” The data, nonetheless, makes it clear that the rearrangement toward the extreme has happened among Democrats, not Republicans. In a supplemental study, Pew found that nearly one-quarter of Democrats say they blocked, unfriended, or stopped following someone after the election because of their political posts on social media. Fewer than one in ten Republicans report doing the same.

The idea of compromisation has ostensibly been tossed out of the window. Accordingly, the left has begun to champion causes like hate speech laws and restrictions upon the acquisition of firearms, both of which would have been political suicide as recent as a few decades prior. They ignore the authority of tradition in pursuit of their idealistic utopia.

Analogously to the question of whether we would want $1 million instantly or a penny that doubles in value daily for one month, conservatives neglect the propensity of small endeavors to add up, oftentimes into something larger than an isolated event. When we lost bump stocks in 2018, we brushed it off as an insignificant loss. Maybe it was. But when the Second Amendment is permanently amended, and not in our favor, it will not be just another loss. Because the left does not believe that American values are concrete, they have no problem promoting legislation for purposes of altering these values. American patriots must wake up and gain a sense of urgency for what is transpiring.
